Definition & Explanation

MDR

MDR (Managed Detection and Response) is a cybersecurity service that provides continuous monitoring, threat detection, and incident response capabilities for organisations. MDR services combine advanced security technologies with human security analysts to identify and respond to cyber threats in real time. Unlike traditional security monitoring tools, MDR services actively investigate suspicious activity, contain threats, and support rapid incident response to minimise damage. Many organisations use MDR to supplement internal security teams or to provide outsourced security operations capabilities. In Australia, MDR services are increasingly adopted by businesses seeking stronger protection against ransomware, phishing attacks, and sophisticated cyber threats. MDR providers typically leverage technologies such as endpoint detection and response (EDR), security analytics, and threat intelligence to deliver proactive threat management. Implementing MDR services significantly improves an organisation’s ability to detect and respond to cyber incidents before they escalate into major security breaches.

In relation to MDR, MyRISK complements managed detection and response providers by adding the governance and assurance layer around what detection outputs mean for control effectiveness, risk exposure, escalation, and reporting. It does not replace operational security response, but it helps ensure the management system around MDR is more coherent. This is useful for organisations that want better executive visibility and defensibility from their MDR investment.
