Definition & Explanation
NIST cyber commonly refers to cybersecurity guidance and frameworks developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). While NIST is a U.S. standards body, its cybersecurity frameworks are widely adopted in Australia and globally as best-practice benchmarks. The NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) provides a structured approach based on five core functions: Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond, and Recover. Australian organisations use NIST cyber guidance to enhance risk management maturity, strengthen incident response, and align cyber governance with international standards. NIST cyber principles complement frameworks such as ISO 27001 and the ACSC Essential Eight. Adopting NIST-based methodologies helps organisations implement scalable, risk-based cybersecurity controls that support operational resilience and regulatory compliance.
